How to Choose the Right Chandelier Size for Your Room

Crystal chandelier hanging above a wooden dining table in a warm dining room

A chandelier is usually the visual anchor of a room. When the scale is right, the fixture ties the furniture, ceiling height and finishes together. When it is wrong, even an expensive piece can dominate the space or disappear into it. The good news: choosing the right size comes down to a few simple measurements.

Start with the room, not the fixture

For open rooms and entryways, use the classic width rule: add the room’s length and width in feet, and treat that number as the fixture diameter in inches. A living room that measures 14 by 16 feet points to a chandelier around 30 inches in diameter.

  • Open rooms: diameter in inches ≈ room length plus width in feet.
  • Above a dining table: diameter between one half and two thirds of the table width, so the fixture lights the table rather than the walkways around it.
  • Two-storey foyers: keep the bottom of the fixture at least seven feet above the floor, or lower if it hangs above a staircase landing where headroom is tighter.

Get the hanging height right

Height decides whether a chandelier feels integrated or intrusive. Above a dining table with a standard eight-foot ceiling, hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Add roughly three inches of clearance for every extra foot of ceiling height.

A fixture that is correctly scaled and hung at the right height disappears into the room — in the best possible way.

Quick reference

Room Placement Starting point
Living room Open floor Diameter ≈ room length + width in feet, read as inches
Dining room Above the table Diameter ½–⅔ of table width, 30–36 in above the tabletop
Entryway Two-storey foyer Bottom of the fixture at least 7 ft above the floor

Every room bends these rules a little — low ceilings, long tables and open floor plans all shift the numbers.
